Jawaharlal Nehru stadium

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located in Delhi, India. This stadium was established in 1982 by the Government of India. Its name is given after the first Prime Minister of India, Sri Jawaharlal Nehru. The reason behind its building was to serve as the venue for the 9th Asian Games in the year of 1982.

The stadium hosts Cricket, Football and many other cultural and sporting events. Many musical concerts have already been held here, in this stadium. It is known to be the base of Indian Olympic Association.

It is one the most large and prominent stadiums of India. It holds a total of 78,000 spectators at a time during the matches while during the concerts; the number rises up to 130,000. This is the 3rd biggest stadium in India and 57th all over the Globe.

The Stadium is spread over an area of 100 acres. The ground’s surface is of grass type. The Stadium is undergoing repairing for the upcoming Common Wealth Games (2010) and will be completed by early 2010.

Outlook of Jawaharlal Nehru stadium

The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, hosted its first One Day International (ODI) cricket match in the year 1984, in which team India competed against the present World Champions, team Australia. The ground has witnessed two One Day International (ODI) cricket matches till date. The first match being the one between India and Australia and in the second one team India competed with the South Africans. In both the matches, Kepler Wessels played as a batsman, but for different countries. He scored 107 runs for Australia in the first game and 90 runs for the South Africans in the second one.
