Fort Maidan

Fort Maidan, earlier known as kotta maidanam, is a famous ground for multi-purpose uses. This ground is situated in Palakkad, Kerala, India. Palakkad is a very beautiful and preserved city of Kerala with many tourist spots. One of the main tourist spot of the city is the very spacious Fort Maidan.

Location and History of Fort Maidan

The Fort Maidan is a large open ground, situated in the heart of the city, Palakkad. Lord Arthur Wellesley was believed to have introduced the game of cricket for the first time in the 18th century for British soldiers. Up till 1952 the ground was considered for domestic cricket only. In 1953, Ranji Trophy was introduced in Fort Maidan. Now Fort Maidan is a regular venue for first class cricket. Many famous state level cricket matches were held in this stadium.

Infrastructure at Fort Maidan

The Fort Maidan holds a maximum capacity of 10,000 peoples at a time. It is a nowadays a famous District Cricket Ground which is partially maintained by the sports ministry. Martyr’s column and an open-air auditorium, which is better known as rappadi is also present in the Fort Maidan. Many ceremonies such as the flag hoisting are held over here. The Fort has a children’s park situated beside it.

Due to low maintenance and other factors, this ground has now stopped hosting any activity, be it cricket or any sport, after Mattancherry Youngsters Cricket Association left this ground, holding the All-India Lakshmanan Memorial Cricket Tournament here, for 24 years.

Nowadays, many repairing has been done such as concrete side walk, dwarf walls etc due to some controversy. The government is trying hard to bring back the status and glamour of Fort Maidan. We hope it will regain it soon.

How to Reach Fort Maidan

The stadium is situated in Palakand, Kerala. The nearest airport is Coimbatore Airport which is at adistance of 55 kilometers from the stadium. Hence it is not convenient. The stadium is at 5 kilometers from the Palakand railway station. So train is more convenient for transportation purpose. Buses and cabs also provides as a well to do mode of transport.
