IPL is the biggest turning point in the history of international cricket which has not only changed the economics of cricket but also the economics of advertising sector on television. It is a T-20 tournament. Also referred as “Million-dollar baby”, IPL has never faced shortage of sponsors in addition to a long list of wiling sponsors.
This tournament was sponsored by many international companies as well as domestic companies. To name a few, they were Pepsi, DLF, Vodafone essar, Hyundai motors and Hero Honda etc.
Brand rivalry
The T-20 formats are shorter and full of action even more than the ODI’s and test matches. So there is very less space for too many advertisers. In such situations there starts brand rivalry. Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Airtel and Hutch, Hero Honda and TVS Motor, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa International are some of the rival brands in the market of cricket. This rivalry has always proved beneficial for the broadcasters as they could acquire more fees from them, which happened with IPL.
Advertising Rates
Advertising rates for IPL T-20 were high in charts. SET Max, IPL’s official TV channel was quiet sure to collect Rs. 300 crore after commitments worth Rs. 220 crore. The price rate of Sony was as under:
For 100 seconds- Rs.25 lakhs
For 50 seconds-Rs. 12.5 lakhs
A package of 7.3 crore for all 44 matches was also declared.
IPL sponsors
One of the important sponsors of IPL is Pepsi. IPL-PepsiCo deal includes investment of $2.5 million on each and every franchise owner. Some other international companies who sponsored this tournament are as follows:
(1)DLF invested Rs. 200 crore in this tournament.
(2)The present sponsor is Vodafone who has invested Rs 32 to 35 crore.
(3) Hyundai, Coca-cola, Max New York, Godrej has invested an avg sum of Rs 18 to 25 crore.
(4)Set, Vodafone and Hyundai are also some of the telecast sponsors of IPL.
(5)Hero Honda is an associate sponsor for five years in a deal worth US$22.5 million.
(6)Citibank, ITC, Orbit and Boomer are the new sponsors who have linked themselves newly with this million dollar baby of Cricket.
(6) Some more sponsors are Kingfisherss, India Cements / N Srinivasan, GMR, Deccan Chronicle, Emerging Media, Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla Mehta, Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Karan Paul, Mukesh Ambani/ Reliance Industries Limited.
(7) Pepsi is the tournament's Official Beverage by signing a five year deal worth USD 12.5 Million.
(8)Kingfisher Airlines is IPL’s umpire partner for five years in a deal of US$ 26.5 million
Future sponsors
IPL is looking forward sponsors from areas such as insurance, banking, automobile, retail and telecom.
